Good Results!

Layan had another echocardiogram today. It was highly anticipated, her mum has been counting down the days! Layan was not happy about being put on the examination bed, but calmed down enough for the team to get good pictures.

Her doctor reported that she no longer has fluid around her lungs! This is great news. Doc has instructed us to decrease Layans medication over the next few days and she will rexamine her on Sunday. After visiting some of the other Kurdish children who are at Sheba, Layan fell asleep, and we headed home.

Almost the Last Echo

Posted on Tue, 07/10/2018 - 21:20 by Johanna Ebert

We all hoped that it would be Layan‘s last echo today. But unfortunately was there again some fluid around her lungs and the doctor had to restart the medicine. We have to come back in one week to make sure that she is healthy when she goes back to Kurdistan.

We are very glad that the mum understands the importance of it and has no problem to stay longer. Let’s pray to the Lord for healing and good echo results next week!

Sweet Layan's Echo

Posted on Wed, 06/27/2018 - 16:29 by Heidi

Sweet Layan went to have an echo today. She was so happy and talkative. Her mother was excited and hoping it will be one of their last trips to the hospital. While we were waiting I helped Layan practice her walking.

She is getting better at it everyday. But the happiness ended when it was time for the echo. Sweet Layan cried the whole time but never tried to wiggle away, thankfully. It made the process a little smoother.

But as soon as it was finished she was all happy again. The doctor said the echo showed that her heart is good and that there is no more fluid in her chest cavity. The news her mother loved the most was the next echo could be the last and then it's back home to Kurdistan. Continue praying for sweet Layan and her mother.

Getting Stronger

Layan and her mum came to hospital for a chest X-Ray and a blood test today. What a lovely pair to spend time with! Layan is smiley and friendly, and engages everyone who meets her! Today while we were waiting for the X-Ray, she managed to charm a few crisps from another patient.

Here she is looking very pleased with herself!

The doctor said the fluid is still decreasing in her lungs, and he is pleased that her chest is nearly looking normal.
Mum is really keen that Layan starts walking more now she is getting stronger following her surgery. Let's keep praying for her continued recovery and development back at our home.

Home Again!

Little Layan was able to come home today. The fluid around her lungs has decreased significantly, and the doctors are happy for her to come back to the house. She is looking bright, and Mum was very happy to come home. She will go back to hospital on Thursday for an xray and blood test to check all is well.

Layan Back at Sheba

Today Layan went to the hospital for an echo. She also hasn't been feeling well the last couple of days. The doctor saw a pleural effusion during the echo. At first, she thought Layan would need a pleural drainage, but after a few other tests, she decided to try it first with medicine.

However, Layan will have to stay over night. During this time they also would like to look at what may be causing her fever.

Today was very hard and stressful for Layan and her mother and we hope they can have a restful night!

Discharged from Secondary ICU

Sweet and courageous Layan and her lovely mother were able to join us in our Shevet Achim community this afternoon. Layan has been discharged from  secondary ICU following her surgery and the doctors have been very pleased with her progress so far.

It was a joy to collect the pair from the hospital. Layan smiled and danced in her car seat all the way home! On arrival back home Layan was able to be reunited with her cousin Taim. This is such wonderful timing as Taim is due to fly home to Kurdistan on Sunday evening.

By the evening time, Layan already seemed to be firmly established as part of the community. I had the pleasure of watching her, Vareen and Briyar playing together and negotiating important business relating to the toy tea set. We are all very much looking forward to getting to know Layan and her mother more over these next few weeks.

Layan will have an echo and review at Sheba in one week's time.

Out of the Bed

Little Layan had a good day, today. In the morning the nurses could remove her drainages and in the afternoon when we visited her and her mum, the mum asked us for an wheelchair.

Short after we arranged one, Layan‘s mum put her in it and we started all together a tour through the secondary ICU. She is a really cute little girl and we enjoyed the time with her. I can barely believe that it is the some child what I meet at the airport, a week ago. Her skin color looks so good and she is not even a little bit shy anymore. She waved, smiled and gave us blown kisses all the time. We hope she will be discharge soon. Please pray with us for a good recovering!

An Answer to Prayer

Yesterday we updated Layan's blog asking for prayer for a quick recovery. So, we have a lot to thank God for!

Today, we visited Layan in ICU. Firstly, we saw her mum, who was happy, smiley and chatty with us. She showed us photographs of Layan drinking milk from a bottle, feeding herself shortly after the surgery. She was so joyful now that Layan is doing well. She is a better colour, with warm little hands and is no longer on oxygen.

The medical team are so pleased with her recovery, that whilst we were there, Layan was moved into secondary ICU. They are planning on removing her chest drains today.

Mum is very keen to know when she and Layan will be able to leave the hospital. The doctor says if she has 5 good days after surgery, then she can come home to Shevet.
So, please pray with us that Layan continues to improve!

Big Surgery Day

Posted on Tue, 05/29/2018 - 23:29 by Johanna Ebert

One day after her arrival, Layan  has had already her huge surgery day.The day started early in the morning with a CT and after that was done, the nurses brought her into the surgery room. Georgia met Layan’s mum outside in the waiting room. First she was very nervous and worried, but after we introduced her to another Kurdish mum, who was at the hospital for an echo, she calmed down and we had a good time together.

Around 5 hours after surgery started, the doctor came out and gave as the pleasant news that the surgery went well. To see Layan later at the ICU was actually very good; her skin color was changed from purple to a normal skin color. And even if she had a lot of IV’s and other cables around her and was still intubated, the mum couldn’t hide her happy smile. We hope and pray that Layan can recover quickly and that she doesn’t has to suffer under any postoperative complications.

Please pray with us!
