Mustafa's Heart Surgery
Tuesday,
February 12, 2008 Back to Their FutureFiled
by When they
arrived at our house last night, everybody was very eager to speak
to Bestoon's father and Lara and Mustafa's mother. The six
families waiting here in Jordan for their turn for surgery were very
encouraged by the reports of the parents. And now would all prefer to
go to Haifa!
They talked for a long time, we heard
Bestoon and Ali's fathers still talking at 02:00 in the night. This
morning we drove to the airport (pictured above), leaving our
house at 09:00, and their flight to Iraq left on time at 12:00.
Already
Bestoon's father has called us from his hometown in northern Iraq to let us know the families arrived safely. All
his family say thank you, his father, brothers, sisters etc. Abu
Bestoon said that they would slaughter at least two sheep on arrival
back home. I wish I were there!
This
concludes the story of Mustafa's journey to Israel for a new heart and
new life.

February 11, 2008 A Joyful Return to JordanFiled
by Mustafa (pictured in center), his sister Lara, and Bestoon returned to Jordan today with smiling
faces. Bestoon's father was so full of joy and thankfulness for his
son's successful heart surgery, and happy to be finally going home.
Mustafa chased his little sister Lara around as we waiting for the bus
that would transport us to Jordan. I could see the relief in their
mother's eyes that both of her children now had healthy hearts and were
so full of energy. After entering Jordan we piled into two taxis and
headed for Amman. Dirk (our Jordan coordinator) was waiting there to
take them to his house where they'd stay until their flights back to
Iraq. Both of
these precious families are scheduled to flight back home on Tuesday.

February 9, 2008Good News!Filed
by Good news! Sing praises to the Lord. Finally, Mustafa's little sister Lara
is out of the hospital, and so both Mustafa and Lara can go home to
Iraq. What a relief this was for their mother, that soon she will be
back home with two healthy angels. Bestoon and his father also celebrated the good news. When we left the hosptial, we all went together to the sea shore.
It was really a happy weekend
celebrating two occasions. Not only are they going home, but it's also
Lara's second birthday. We celebrated with singing, dancing, balloons,
and sharing a very tasty cake with neighbors and kids from my church. Click

Mustafa is doing very
well after his surgery, but insists on staying in hospital where sister
Lara is being treated for pneumonia, refusing to
leave his mom and go to his hosts (Lamis and family). Lamis
is concerned that he'll pick up a hospital infection, and asks us to
pray for Lara's quick healing.

January 24, 2008Good Old Normal ChildrenFiled
by When
we visited Mustafa and his little sister Lara today both were very
happy children playing with their toys and looking and behaving like
good old normal children--not like two who've just been through
open-heart surgery!
Mom hopes the final okay is near
at hand so
that they can head on back home to Iraq. Lara is scheduled for another
echo and check-up on Sunday which very well could be the first steps to
their release to begin their journey back home.

Monday,
January 7, 2008Ready for Take-OffFiled
by I
was thankful to have the opportunity to return to Haifa today to visit
with Mustafa as he recovers from surgery. I find it hard not to be able
to visit all of the patients I have escorted from Jordan, but it has
been best for me to be in Jerusalem and at Wolfson near Tel Aviv the
last few weeks to visit and help patients here while Lamis and other
brothers and sisters help the families at Rambam in Haifa. Yet because
I will go to the US next week to welcome a new grandson and enjoy
family time there, I set aside today for a Haifa trip. I could not
leave these children and mothers without another visit and chance to
thank God for what He has already done, and will yet do for their
children because of His great love for them all.
Arriving
in the children's surgical ward, Jane and I found Mustafa sleeping, and
his mother was out of the room. It was wonderful to see him with no
oxygen needed, and no tubes or monitors attached, resting peacefully!
After a little time, his mother returned and we had a special reunion,
rejoicing over Mustafa's progress. He awoke when his mother spoke, and
even though still sleepy, greeted me with a smile. He remembered that
he'd refused a trip to the beach the last time I was there, and wanted
to let me know he had seen the sea. A few minutes later, Lamis arrived
with Lara,
who has been staying with her family since Mustafa was hospitalized
last week. To see the smiles on all their faces as
they were reunited for the afternoon was beautiful. Once
Mustafa was fully awake he got out of bed and began to walk around and
play with an airplane his mother brought him. He is doing extremely
well, and could be dismissed tomorrow as his sister is admitted for her
surgery. Their mother too was very happy and doing well. The rest of us
are overwhelmed at the thought of what it must be like to have two
children both needing heart surgeries, far from home, without her
family.... and when she first arrived, Mustafa's mother was overwhelmed
too. Now however, after both children have gone through their
catheterizations and Mustafa is recovering from surgery, she has a
strength about her which is satisfying to see, and I thank God for
that. I explained that I would be leaving next week, and bade them
farewell as they will likely be home before I return to Israel. I
assured them I would be praying for them, and I ask you to join me. May
God continue to be glorified as His love permeates the lives of this
family.

2, 2008Hands Once Cold, Now WarmFiled
by It's
always amazing to touch warm hands that once felt cold and lifeless.
Such was my experience today when my fingers met those of
Mustafa. He underwent surgery to repair a ventricular septal
defect (hole in his ventricular chambers) and pulmonary stenosis
(narrowing of the arteries).
According to the surgeon, Dr.
Mishal, all went well.
Though Mustafa is now running
a slight fever, his tubes may be removed tonight.
Mustafa's
mother greeted us today with tired but bright eyes. Like so
many
mothers, she does not understand why all the tubes are inserted into
her son, but she has begun to trust both the fine physicians and nurses
of Rambam Hospital. Life for Mustafa's mother is doubly
difficult, since her nearly two-year-old daughter Lara,
also here for surgery, waits at the house of one of our precious
volunteers, Lamis. Lara cries quite a bit at night missing
her
mother but is often entertained by Lamis's husband Michelle. This
surgery is taking the heart, time, and lives of our volunteers and
patients. Lamis commented that she has had little sleep in
helping so much, but it fills her with such joy that she would not
trade it for anything.
Please pray for
Lara missing her
mother, the energy of Mustafa's mother, Lamis and Michelle, and the
life of precious Mustafa now on the road to recovery.
Blessings
from Haifa.

December 30, 2007Visiting the Zoo and the
BeachFiled
by Today
my son and daughter took Mustafa to the zoo, which he greatly enjoyed.
Sorry there are no pictures of that--the camera wasn't working for some
reason. Yesterday Mustafa, his sister Lara, and their mother had a fun
time at the beach, standing on the shore and playing in the sand. Last Thursday evening, I took Mustafa
to a Christmas dinner at my church. He liked the food and the gifts.
Mustafa
is scheduled to be admitted to the hospital Tuesday morning, with
surgery on Wednesday.

CatheterizationFiled
by Mustafa's
catheterization this morning was quick and easy--finished in only one
hour. Afterwards Mustafa felt very good. He was able to take a drink
before too long, and he proved that he's a mature boy by following all
the doctor's orders.
If Sana isn't feeling better in the
next few days, Mustafa will be scheduled in her surgery spot this
coming Wednesday.

our friend in Haifa, told me this evening that Mustafa had an x-ray and
blood tests today, and was released from the hospital. He'll return
early Sunday morning for his catheterization.
Lamis
had car
trouble today, in inclement weather too! So a friend of hers came to
the hospital to pick up Mustafa, his baby sister Lara and their mother, while Lamis

17, 2007 Slept Like A BabyFiled
by We
had a very good day in Haifa today. The hospital allowed us to use one
of the rooms they have set aside for out of town family members so that
Mustafa, his mother, and his sister Lara
would all be together there. Lamis, our friend from Haifa, came to the
hospital to visit the patients last evening. We decided that we would
try to take Mustafa out this morning while he waits his turn for
catheterization, and while Lara
is hospitalized. Mustafa
slept like a baby all night. I was excited that when he awoke in the
morning I could show him the beautiful view of the Mediterranean we had
outside our window. And I was not disappointed by his reaction - even
though I could not understand his Kurdish words of delight, his face
told me what he wanted to express. He has been spending a lot of time
in front of a big aquarium just outside his sister's hospital room, so
to think that we were taking him to view this big water close up was
special and I figured he would be extremely excited to go --- WRONG!!
He cried and refused to go with us! No matter what we did or said, he
simply would not go. So we left him there with hopes he will go next
time, and took Sana
and her mother to the beach. When we
arrived, we were surprised but thankful to hear that Mustafa's sister Lara
was going to be dismissed this afternoon! While Lara's dismissal was
happening, we showed Mustafa the pictures of our trip to the beach, and
packed our little room upstairs so all of the children and both moms
could go to the apartment. Mustafa's mother was very relieved to get to
leave the hospital. Alex and I were also relieved that the mothers
would be together tonight, because we both had to return to Jerusalem
this evening, and we knew that Mustafa would be going in for pre-op
testing Thursday before his catheterization on Sunday. We do not yet
know when they might schedule Lara's
catheterization because it will depend on her recovery from pneumonia. There
was one more event which these Muslim Kurdish children and their
mothers found very exciting today. Just as we were preparing to get on
the elevator to leave the hospital, out
stepped a man dressed as a Santa delivering toys to the children's ward.
They wanted to have their picture taken with him, so we obliged. Please
pray for Mustafa and his mother. Lara and Mustafa's mother has a
challenge ahead with both her children requiring surgeries... what
patience, perseverance and assistance she will need! Pray that the
believers in Haifa will come alongside these precious families to
minister His lovingkindness to them. And thank God with us for His
ability and desire to heal Mustafa's heart and use His children in ways
that are a blessing as He works through them. Click

Sunday December
16, 2007 Mustafa Arrives in Israel Filed
by
The
newest patients from Iraq--Mustafa (wearing the orange sweater), his
sister Lara,
and Sana--have
arrived in Israel. However so far, the theme that already existed, and
which has become more highlighted since our subsequent trip to Haifa,
is... waiting!
Sana has been waiting since last
year’s
echocardiogram screening to be accepted by a center who could treat her
very complicated heart condition. Mustafa and Lara have been waiting
for word their visas were approved and they could be accepted together
for surgery. Last night we all waited on opposite sides of the
passport control area of the airport in Amman for over one and a half
hours until immigration allowed our newest patients to officially enter
Jordan. Today we had to wait while Israeli security went through an
extremely intensive luggage search process. After arriving at Rambam
Medical Center, each of the children went through initial exams and
echocardiograms rather quickly, but little Lara
required extra tests to determine whether she has pneumonia, and as I
write, we have been waiting for about four hours for those results.
 Thankfully
the children have forgotten the unhappiness induced by lengthy tests
after spending most of the waiting time in the hospital playroom area.
When told we would have to wait longer, we also took a break to the kanyon (mall
attached to the hospital) for some schwerma
for dinner.
 The
children seem content; the mothers, on the other hand, are feeling the
fatigue of the travel, the emotion of their children’s
conditions
and upcoming treatment, and the challenge of having to wait so long for
these test results. But wait we must, in the event that Lara might
need to be admitted this evening for pneumonia. And
now we know, because the space between these paragraphs was another
waiting spell while we tried to find a place to plug in the laptop
after the battery died – Lara is being admitted tonight for
pnemonia. Here at Rambam there is a parents’ hostel on the
top
floor in which parents from out of town are allowed to stay. Currently
the hospital is working to arrange one of these rooms for Mustafa's
mother and sister for the duration of her stay. Please
pray for the mother of Mustafa and Lara
as she enters Israel and finds herself immediately overnighting in the
hospital with two children. Pray for wisdom for the doctors as they
seek the best course of treatment for Lara and determine how to
schedule Mustafa’s heart surgery in these circumstances. We
know
that all three children will require a catheterization before the
doctors know the best course of treatment for each child’s
heart. Earlier today the doctors determined that Mustafa would
likely have his catheterization on Sunday… this could change
now
that Lara is admitted.
All of the family members
need your
prayers as the days unfold and God--who is always on time--does His
work in the midst of every detail of these events.
Ruth Ann, a short-term
volunteer, adds her reflections of today's events:
Today
was my first experience as a volunteer.
I had heard wonderful things about the
ministry and wanted to help. Donna
was
planning to bring over two families by herself, which would be very
difficult. I was
asked if I’d like to go
with her.
I
met Donna in Amman, and we left for Israel early the next
morning. We were
loaded in two taxis for
a trip across the border. As the little
girl played quietly, the mother was very nervous. I
held her hand at every checkpoint. The
doctors and nurses greeted us so warmly;
I could see the relief from both mothers.
Ministry
in the States requires you to be flexible. Here
you must be fluid. Airplanes
arrive late and security is always
an issue. Waiting for
hospital test
results requires patience. Just
when I would
hear “and next we will . . . ” the situation
changed and we were off in another
direction.
Through
the long day I saw the dedication of the hospital
staff, and the welcome smiles from other patients and families. When translation became
difficult, a stranger
who was at the hospital with his son came to our assistance. A medical question asked in
Hebrew was
translated to Arabic by a parent with the shared concern for a
critically ill
child.
Donna
is well known by the doctors and staff. She is writing
down information and making arrangements all through the day. The love and dedication
shown by this
ministry has been a blessing for me to see. Although
this is my first experience, I certainly pray that it will not
be my last.
