Jihan's Heart Surgery

Thoughts as Jihan Leaves, Still Unwell
Filed by

After months of hope and prayer for Jihan, it has been a shock for us to learn that doctors consider her surgeries ultimately unsuccessful and that she has been sent home to an uncertain future.  While over 90% of the surgeries we are involved in are successful, periodically we come face to face with sickness and suffering that won't be healed this side of the resurrection.

I find some comfort in knowing that the love of God has been very tangibly expressed to Jihan again and again by our staff, and by those of you who sponsored her surgery, prayed for her, and sent her cards and messages and gifts.  There's no force on this planet that can stop God's redeeming love from finding a way; I look forward to learning with you one day how our Father has used these events for Jihan's good.

Jihan Leaves For Home
Filed by

Jihan and her father have endured three open-heart surgeries and a five-and-a-half-month stretch away from home.  Jihan’s father reached his stress limit two operations and four months ago.  Though Jihan’s smile never faded, each surgery seemed to take a little more out of her.  Her final echocardiogram revealed yesterday that she would need yet another surgery. The fourth surgery she would need to have would be to repair a valve that had already been fixed once.  When her father learned of this possibility, he had a meltdown complete with tears and outbursts of frustration.  The opinion of the surgeons and Jihan’s family is that she would not survive another surgery.

As I kissed her father and embraced Jihan before they boarded the bus at the Israel/Jordan crossing, my eyes moistened with uncertainty for the future of this enduring family.  A sensitive security officer named Dalkan who had expedited our crossing asked me what was wrong with her, noting her swollen face and slow movements.  I told him that she had endured three heart surgeries and now would be heading back to Iraq.  Looking at my uncertain face he said, “It did not succeed, did it?”  I turned to him and said, “No, we did not have the results we wanted.”  He asked me what would happen next.  I responded that she may not be long for this world, or there would be a miracle.  He smiled and said, “Miracle.”

At this time the skill of man is finished in the life of Jihan and we release her to the hope of the Father. Though we may not hear from Jihan and her father in the near future, let us together release her with prayer into His will, His glory, His healing, and His hope. Godspeed to Jihan and her father.

Today's Echo Postponed
Filed by

Jihan's echocardiogram, previously scheduled for today, has been postponed until this coming Tuesday. So I don't have much to report.  In the meantime, here's a picture of Jihan going along with us to pick up one of my kids from school.  Jihan loved all the bumps, which are plentiful on the sidewalks and streets of Jerusalem!

Playing 'Til the Echo
Filed by

Jihan played happily with us again today for a couple hours while her father was out with Alex getting a hair cut.  I'm just a little concerned, though, about the phone bill we'll have with those two cell phones calling Iraq!

Jihan's next echocardiogram will be in two days--this Thursday.  We will let you know the results.

At the Shevet House
Filed by

My favorite part in each of our children's treatment process is when they get to come stay in our big old house in Jerusalem.  (Did you know this house was the first children's hospital in the Middle East?)  I like preparing their simple but cozy guest room, and I like watching the Iraqi kids and my own kids play together. Today it was our turn to enjoy Jihan's company.  This morning we found out that Jihan would be discharged from the hospital today, and late this afternoon, Fred brought Jihan and her father to the house, where they'll be with us until the doctors say they can go home to Iraq.

While David took Jihan's father grocery shopping, we got to spend time with Jihan.  Between Hebrew, English and Kurdish, my children and Jihan have no common language, but it didn't matter.  They dressed up in costumes, played with toys, cuddled the guinea pig, drew on the chalkboard, made faces at one another, and played their own version of the board game "Trouble."  I painted Jihan's fingernails.

When Jihan's father got back, Jihan hesitated a little about going downstairs to their room. So I guess this means she had as much fun as we did.

Welcome to the Shevet house, Jihan!

Newness of Life
Filed by

What a wonderful surprise it was today, as we entered Wolfson Medical Center, to find Jihan had been moved from Intermediate ICU to a standard room in the children's ward.  It was very plain to see that the Jihan we had seen one week ago today, clinging to life after having just come through her third surgery, has now been raised to newness of life. Her countenance radiated with laughter and smiles, filling the room with happiness and joy, contagiously spreading to both those visiting her and to the other patients sharing her room.  The nurses said Jihan is doing very well.  It was quite obvious to those who had seen her one week ago, and to those presently with her, that she once again has experienced a  miracle.  (Click the arrow below to play a video from today.)

Truly, God's faithfulness has once again been shown in His answering of the many prayers.  In the days ahead, keep watching this blog as we update Jihan's progress.  Join us in thanking God for such a positive report and such a beautiful little girl.

Turning the Corner
Filed by

Thanks to your prayers and the fine medical staff at Wolfson hospital, Jihan is a lot better.  She has really turned the corner, so to speak.  The tubes have been removed from her lungs and she is in intermediate ICU.  As I stroked her hair and spoke to her, she was able to give me a weak thumbs up.  The Lord is good.  Amen.

Jihan is in Our Lord's Care
Filed by

It was a typical May morning in Jerusalem.  Not yet too hot and a slight breeze was blowing.  After a morning coffee with Alex in a local coffee shop, we set off to visit the Wolfson Medical Center in Tel Aviv.

When we arrived, we had to search for a parking space that we fortunately found after 10 minutes.  We entered the Pediatric ICU and were immediately greeted by Hasan, the father of Jihan.  Jihan was recovering from her third surgery in five months.  Her father has remained attentively by her side, sleeping in a small room (more like closet) for the entire time of her stay in the hospital.  This is the second time we have met and he greets me warmly.  A father is a father, no matter what culture, and I can see the concern and love for his daughter in his eyes.  He quickly introduces me to her.  Even with all the tubes sticking in her, she gives me a brave smile and briefly raises her hand as if to wave.  I can see the fear and yet determination in her eyes.  To have gone through so much in a culture where neither she nor her father can speak the language, and yet to bravely continue on, is much more than a normal adult could do.  She is truly in our Lord’s care.

After a few minutes taking pictures, in walks Dr. Eli Gilaad, the pediatric intensivist for the hospital.  His love for all children shines through.  He spoke excellent English.  (This is probably due to his medical training in the United State.)  I learned that for the first time in a long time they felt good about her prognosis.  If all goes according to plan, he hopes she could be discharged in two to three weeks. At that time she and her father will have to return to northern Iraq.  Please pray for their safety and her continued recovery.  Dr. Gilad was very worried about the current state of war in Iraq and the medical care Jihan will need when she returns home.

After a very warm goodbye from everyone, which included a hug by Hasan, we departed.  I was completely overwhelmed by God’s love that was shown in that room.  Let us all pray for Shevet’s continued success as it brings the message of reconciliation for the Jews and Arabs through the love of Jesus Christ.

Jihan is Better Today
Filed by

I just spoke with the ICU in Israel and got an encouraging report -- Jihan is better today! She is somewhat awake, but still intubated. She still needs mega-prayer, but thank God for His work to bring her through so far! I am looking forward to the time I can call her father's cell phone again and get to speak with her... this has been one way I've been able to ''be there'' with her along the way even on days when I could not be in the hospital. Technology serves the Kingdom well for such opportunities :-) and though she will have no idea how far away I am, I can't wait for the feeling of being there with her again, though via long distance.

Thank you for praying... please remain vigilant on her behalf and for the glory of God as He does His work.

Giving thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His love endures forever!

Jihan in a Battle for Her Life
Filed by

Jihan is in a real battle for her life.  Your prayers are really needed at this stage. Jihan seemed to hear me as I called her name, and responded to my touch.  Her father knows that she's in God's hands and says so often.

Jihan Not Stabilized Yet
Filed by

Our visit to Wolfson today was met with the news that Jihan has not stabilized yet. I was accompanied by two ladies from the UK and fellow staff person, Simantov. Due to what was happening, no pictures were taken today. It was a grueling sight to watch Jihan with her eyes open, experiencing what appeared to be uncontrolled muscle spasms. Her father was at her bedside and told us that the doctors had told him that the surgery was a success, but that this was a critical time of recovery for her. As Abu Jihan was called away by a telephone call, the four of us joined in prayer at her bedside. We ask each of you to please continue your prayers for her. Jihan needs all the prayer effort she can get at this critical time. A scripture that comes to mind is God's promise to those that pray. It is: The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous man (or woman) availeth much!

Jihan Critical Following Third Surgery

Jihan went through an eight-hour surgery today to close a hole in her heart and is now in the ICU.  This is her third surgery since coming to Israel, as doctors persist in the long fight to restore her life and health.  Donna has just left the hospital and says that Jihan is now in a critical period, and could go either way.  Our prayer is requested.  A full update will follow tomorrow.

Surgery Tentatively Set for Sunday
Filed by

Her future is so bright, she has to wear shades.  It was a very good visit with Jihan. She is one tough little lady.  After all the complications and set backs, she is still able to smile and give me the thumbs up.  Thanks for all your prayers and support.

Donna Petrel adds:
Fred and I visited with Jihan this afternoon in the ICU where she awaits her third surgery, tentatively set for Sunday. Upon arrival I saw Jihan across the room happily sticking large colorful stickers on the bedrails. The nurse reported that Jihan was doing okay, but bored.
We removed these stickers together, and then I presented her with something special I'd been looking for for her - a little ring. I've had a hard time finding something small enough for her tiny fingers, but finally found something a few days ago. She liked it but, as has become her practice, wanted to see what else was in my purse. I was prepared for her this time with a snack which we all shared. Then we began some silly antics with the stuffed toys, and she really laughed alot.

My visit was short today, as there was a patient waiting to be transported back to Gaza in our van. When I learned that Jihan's surgery is tentatively scheduled for Sunday morning, I was happy to hear that it will be done then, but also sad that I won't be able to see her afterwards, as I leave for America that same day. After thinking about how to manage this information, I chose not to tell Jihan goodbye for my final time today. She really feels attached to me, and will not necessarily understand the time-frame of my departure, and may feel abandoned when she needs me most. I'd love to see her again before I go, and will try to work that out, but if not, I prefer that she knows I'm home after she awakes from a successful surgery. I want to leave her knowing how much I love her and that I'm praying for her.

Please keep praying fervently for Jihan's life. Her father has rallied in the past week, and seems to be much more settled and focusing on Jihan instead of himself. I'm thankful for this! This surgery will be a real challenge for Jihan's fragile body and she needs all the encouragement she can get. Thank you for keeping her lifted up to the Lord who loves her so much. I am sure that one of the Shevet Achim team will follow up with news of Jihan's surgery Sunday evening (unless the date needs to be changed again).

From Worry to Laughter
Filed by

Today, Jihan was doing much much better than yesterday as you will be able to see from the two videos below. Note the absence of all the tape and tubes, that were so prevalent yesterday.  It is equally refreshing to hear Abu Jihan laughing and interacting in a very positive way with Jihan and the ICU staff.

In the latter video, she asked to talk to our staff member, Donna, who is currently in Haifa with Sam and his mother awaiting surgery on Tuesday. So we called Donna and on the spur of the moment decided to tape it.

As for Jihan's surgery, there is an opening on Wednesday; however, the doctors are still in consultation as to whether they should proceed just yet, due to the instability of Jihan's health this past week.

For now, we will enjoy the videos and keep praying for God's intervention on Jihan's behalf.

Preparing for Her Third Surgery
Filed by

I was reall
y shocked to see Jihan with so many tubes coming from her mouth.  I think this is the first time that I have seen one of our patients on a ventilator and not sedated.  It is obviously uncomfortable and frustrating for this little girl.  Jihan is struggling to breathe because fluid is building up in her lungs.  I had to stand by and watch while the nurses suctioned her lungs, a procedure that seems to be happening several times a day.  If Jihan had been able to make a sound she would have been crying.  What a brave young girl.  She has had to put up with so many painful procedures over these last months.

We played today with a coloring book and crayons, went through my purse, put stickers on each other's faces, and tried the jewelry I had on Jihan.  We had fun but I could tell that she is frustrated because she can't speak to me or anyone else.  She isn't able to eat either, so I made sure to hide the Bamba I brought for her today.  Her father is back in the hospital full time, though Jihan seems to be worried about him instead of being able to rest in his presence.

According to the doctors Jihan will likely go into surgery in the next 48 hours.  This is her third operation in the five months that she has been with us in Israel.  Please pray with us for her total healing.

Jihan Sedated, On Ventilator

Word in from Jihan's doctors that she's been sedated and put back on mechanical respiration in the wake of continuing breathing difficulty.  Her cardiologist, Dr. Aki Tamir, reports that Jihan needs yet another heart surgery to repair a valve; without it, "she will die," yet the surgery itself is also high-risk.  Please pray!

Jihan's Struggle- And Her Father's
Filed by

I was shocked this morning when I arrived at the hospital and saw how poorly Jihan was doing. Last evening when we visited, she was doing so well, and very happy, even though her complicated heart situation remains closely scrutinized by the ICU doctors. This morning she was swollen again from edema, and although she awoke and sat up when I arrived, she was weak and not herself. The additional issue of her father's behaviour added to Jihan's challenges, and overall, she was not doing well.

Although the medical staff asked that her father be removed to help him deal with the ways he was venting his frustration over Jihan's long stay, the reality of her need for her father became the key focus of the situation. Please remember the father of Jihan when you pray. His attitude makes a huge difference in the health of his daughter, and although I have hesitated to share it with you in detail, I will say that he has been speaking out that his daughter not live. He has told the medical staff as well as his daughter this. Today I confronted him over such words, as when he came in and found Jihan's condition worse, he was venting his frustation on her and me. My main prayer over Jihan of late has been "Live, Jihan." Please join me in praying prayers of life for her. The medical staff maintains the care for Jihan as their primary focus, even while dealing with the "bad behaviour" of her father. But God looks at the heart of Abu Jihan, and sees someone who needs Him. She still has major difficulties, and will not be dismissed any time soon. Pray that all the work God wants done will be done on all the hearts involved.

Jihan is Better Tonight
Filed by

Thank God!! Jihan was more like herself tonight when we saw her at the hospital. The chest tube had been removed, and she was receiving oxygen from the nasal canula rather than the facial mask. She was chattering and laughing and playing, such a big change from only 24 hours ago.

Please keep praying for Jihan to receive total healing. Her father continues to struggle with the burden of being here so very long; tonight doctors asked us to remove him from the hospital when he complained about the length of her treatment and became disruptive.

Remember to pray for the doctors as well, as they treat her complicated case.

Breathing Struggle Remains a Mystery

Filed by

Before arriving in the ICU area of the hospital today, a group of volunteers and I passed by Dr. Tam in the hallway. He was the first doctor to examine Jihan after her arrival in Israel at the SACH house on January 15. I asked how she was doing after the procedure yesterday to drain the fluid from around her lungs. He said they were concerned for her, and that she was about to undergo a bronchoscopy in hopes it would reveal more about her struggle to breathe. We headed immediately to the ICU, and I visited with Jihan during part of the time she was being prepped for the procedure. The volunteers were able to visit her for a few minutes, then leave the ICU to pray for Jihan. She is still weak, but seemed a little better than yesterday. The doctors helped us understand that she would be anesthetized even though the procedure was not painful, but because it would upset her to be awake.

About an hour and a half I returned to the ICU to find Jihan sitting up in bed taking a breathing treatment. She seemed to be in pretty good spirits, and she and her father had an Iraqi Israeli friend visiting with them too. I asked the doctor about the bronchoscopy results, and she said they didn't find anything. They are still trying to find the reason for her problems.

Please pray for Jihan to have the continuing courage to persevere through this time of treatment. The doctors and nurses need our prayers as they do their best to give Jihan the best treatment for her problems. Keep praying for Abu Jihan, who is very ready to take Jihan home, wants her to be well, is tired of all the tests and tears for his daughter.... yet needs to let the doctors do all they can for her. I'm thankful our Father in heaven sees all, and knows how to touch Jihan's life, and all of us around her, with his gracious lovingkindness.

Rising to the Occasion

Filed by

Today, as I entered Wolfson Medical Center, I found Jihan asleep, so I went searching for her father.  Abu Jihan was visiting with a man from Hebron whose child had come through open heart surgery and was expected to be released later today. That family’s total time at the center had been only a matter of weeks, based on the problems that had been corrected in their child. And based on their home location, both the husband and the wife had been together during the entire time. It was easy to see the longing in Abu Jihan’s eyes wishing it were him and his daughter who were now being discharged.

Despite all these emotions welling up inside him, he greeted me with a smile, a hearty handshake and a hug. The relationship we are developing is a gift from God for the times God knew Abu Jihan would be going through. In asking him how he was doing, he shook his head affirmative stating, “Ta’mom” (fine). It was at lunch a little later, when he and I were alone, that I asked that question again. He looked away, took a deep breath and with a sigh began to share his true state of being. He is a concerned father determined to stand strong at his daughter’s side at this time when she needs him so much. The strength that I see pouring through him now shows me that he is doing very well compared with days not so far removed, but his face and his statements shared his concern for his daughter, Jihan. It has been truly a maturing of their relationship together -- a relationship much different than when they arrived some four going on five months ago. I have seen a dad become a father, rising to the occasion when his daughter has needed him the most. That in itself is reward enough for all the effort and time poured into their lives by the Shevet Achim staff. Oh, the ups and downs will continue to come as Jihan is not “out of the woods" yet, but their journey is now together instead of two traveling the same path, but not joined. Thanks to those who have been praying over them. Your prayers are availing much!

 Donna Petrel adds:

After spending the morning with Ahmad for his echo, and a short joyful visit with Hana and her mother, I had a chance to visit Jihan in the ICU. I found her dozing with her father at her side, and when I stroked her head, she awoke. She was very quiet and subdued, and seemed weak. I asked the nurse how she was doing, and she replied that they were about to do a procedure to suction around her lungs for pneumothorax, or collapsed lung. Several of us will visit tomorrow and hope to find her doing better after the procedure today.

Please pray for Jihan to regain her lively spunkiness again. She has been so brave, but currently seems pretty worn down from this lengthy ordeal to treat so many health problems.

Princess
Filed by

Jihan was noticeably less active today as she lay in the ICU of Wolfson Medical Center. The last three days of having an irregular and slower heart beat has zapped her strength and vitality. She now has a half-inch diameter drainage tube running from her right lung where fluids have been accumulating. The doctors' report is that her heart rate has now become steady which is a good sign. As the fluid is drained and she remains in a restful scenario, the doctors are hoping she will begin regaining her strength. The doctors are monitoring her carefully in hopes that she can be relieved as soon as possible of some of the tubes and cables that are attached to her from head to toe.

Her father was in good spirits today, which was much different than yesterday (your prayers are making a difference). He was supportive and encouraging to Jihan and even began cracking some funny statements in Arabic between the two, which brought a forced, yet genuine, smile from Jihan. This was encouraging for the ICU staff as well, as the atmosphere has been stressful since Jihan's re-admission.

Please continue praying for this precious little princess, who has come so far and through so much, since her initial screening at the Red Crescent Hospital in Amman, Jordan last December. May the will of God (her knight in shining armor) come forth rapidly on her behalf!

More Time
Filed by

This morning while I was eating breakfast, a call came in from Jihan's father. He sounded as down as I've ever heard him, and was asking me to come to the hospital for Jihan. It was several hours before I could get there, and when we arrived, we found Jihan in the ICU alone. Her father was resting, apparently at a point of exhaustion in every way. After spending some time with Jihan, I spoke with Dr. Gilad about her. He said Jihan was still very sick, and the complications of her heart are not easy to treat. More time will be required to treat her condition... and ''more time'' is what Abu Jihan is not interested in hearing. He is extremely frustrated, and ready to see his other children. Please pray for him; he does not know how to handle the stress, and his attitude toward others is difficult right now. It was my hope that by being there, the Lord would help me have a gentle answer to diffuse his agitation.

Jihan enjoyed some pretty pictures drawn by children in the US, and was beginning to color a special one when the nurse arrived with some medication - a big dose of several oral syringefuls. Jihan tried it and started to cry it tasted so bad. It was a struggle but she got most of it down. She didn't want to color any more and fell asleep.

When I went back to see her later, she was happier. I presented her with a necklace I'd found for her, and that delighted her. I had been waiting for the right moment to give it to her, and she needed the ''special treatment'' today.

She is so brave in the face of so much illness. Please keep praying for this precious little girl to withstand every difficulty she is facing, and become the beautiful woman God created her to be.

Jihan has been put back in the ICU because her heart rate dropped very low last night. Please pray for her fervently, as the battle continues for her precious life. Her father is quite distressed, and also needs fervent prayer. The doctors are watching and will have her in their excellent care; pray for them as well. Pray that we will have the balanced love for them that settles and gives life.....

A Little Down
Filed by

Jihan's spirits seemed a little down today following her catheterization yesterday.  She was in some pain, especially when she coughed or laughed.

She was able to put on her own shoes and walk to the scales to weigh in for the nurse.  I brought two puzzles from the game room, but I ended up putting them together myself; despite holding the pieces up next to her eye, she still couldn't make out the shapes and pictures clearly due to her weak vision.

After checking in on Ahmad and Hana's mom--and to quickly borrow a camera--I caught up with Jihan and her father again in the game room.  Jihan was entertaining herself with a contraption involving tiny balls and a spiral ramp. &nb
