Summer 2007 Campaign: Confrontation at Carmel

Once again the northern Israel port city of Haifa—at the foot of Mount Carmel, where Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal—is at the frontlines of a struggle to define God for the people of the Middle East.

Haifa has a long history of good relations between its Jewish, Muslim, and Christian residents.  But in the past six years bus and restaurant bombings—and last summer’s barrage of Hizbullah rockets—have challenged the belief that Abraham’s sons can find true reconciliation. Those behind these attacks are leading millions in the Middle East to believe that it is God’s will for Isaac and Ishmael to fight to the death.

And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”  Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD...

In a breakthrough agreement, the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa has agreed to take twelve living stones—Muslim children from Iraq—give them new life through heart surgery, and send them back to their homes as a powerful demonstration of God’s true call to love our neighbors, and even our enemies.

Just as Elijah once confronted false prophets on Mount Carmel, we too have been given opportunity to overcome evil with good, and affirm that God’s choice of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is meant to be a blessing to all peoples:

Let it be known this day that you are God in Israel....

Will you be one of those who do not bow the knee, but stand for truth in the Middle East?  We need commitments of $84,000 during this summer to provide for housing, transportation, and sharing in the medical expenses  together with Israeli donors.

brothers to dwell together in unity... for there the LORD commanded the blessing--life forevermore.
